Effective immediately, completion of the Basic Course in Medical Education Technology (BCMET) is now mandatory for promotions to the positions of Associate Professor and Professor. This directive underscores the NMC's commitment to ensuring that educators are well-versed in contemporary teaching methodologies, thereby elevating the standard of medical training across the nation.
The NMC's recent notification delineates specific criteria for faculty advancements within medical institutions. According to the Teachers Eligibility Qualifications in Medical Institutions Regulations, 2022, faculty members aspiring for higher academic roles must undergo and complete the BCMET from NMC-designated institutions. This initiative is designed to equip educators with the necessary skills to effectively impart knowledge using modern educational technologies.
For faculty members currently holding positions or those seeking appointments, this mandate introduces a structured pathway for professional development:
- Existing Faculty: Those already serving in capacities below Associate Professor are required to enroll in and complete the BCMET to be eligible for future promotions.
- New Appointments: In instances where faculty positions have been recently sanctioned and appointments made promptly, the respective State or Union Territory's Principal Secretary of Medical Education must provide an affidavit. This document should affirm that the appointed faculty will complete the BCMET training within the forthcoming academic year, specifically before the application process for the Letter of Permission (LoP) for the 2026–2027 academic session, anticipated around October 2025.
The NMC has communicated this directive to the principal secretaries and directors of medical education across all States and Union Territories. The onus is now on these regional authorities to ensure:
- Compliance: Verification that all medical colleges under their jurisdiction adhere to the BCMET completion requirement for faculty promotions.
- Documentation: Procurement and submission of the necessary affidavits for newly appointed faculty members, confirming their commitment to complete the BCMET within the stipulated timeframe.
The emphasis on faculty development through structured training programs isn't novel. The erstwhile Medical Council of India (MCI), through the Graduate Medical Education Regulations of 1997, mandated the establishment of Medical Education Units (MEUs) in all medical colleges. These units were envisioned to facilitate faculty access to modern educational technologies. Since 2009, initiatives like the Basic Course Workshops in Medical Education Technologies have been conducted via selected Regional and Nodal Centres, aiming to bolster teaching competencies among medical educators.
